HAWKWIND – stalwarts of the UK festival scene for 40 years are very special guests on this amazing bill for rock fans. In 1970, the band appeared outside the perimeter fence of the Isle of Wight Festival as a protest to the admission charge. Jimi Hendrix was spotted in the audience. The same year they played at the first Glastonbury Festival. These activities helped establish them as the people’s band, as well as being widely acknowledged with creating a brand new genre of music - space-rock leading to a massive hit single – ‘Silver Machine’.
Throughout their career the band also have continued to perform at numerous free concerts, most famously the STONEHENGE festival, and have supported many and various charities, including SHELTER, GREENPEACE, TRAVELLERS AID TRUST, FREE TIBET CAMPAIGN and SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES.
2009 saw the band celebrating 40 years in the business playing to packed venues the length and breadth of the country with the highlights being a stunning headline set at the 2009 Beautiful Days festival in Devon which earned them a nomination at the UK festival awards.
Summer 2011 sees the recording of a new studio album, “Onward”, due for release in April 2012 along with a new Dave Brock solo album, “Looking for Love in the Lost Land of Dreams”. Hawkwind are true festival perennials and UK Events are proud to have them performing at ‘Rockin’ The Park 2012’.

CARL PALMER PLAYS ‘PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION’ - Carl Palmer is a drummer’s drummer. A consummate professional, a brilliant technician and a dynamic showman, he has thrilled listeners and audiences alike for nearly four decades with some of music’s most memorable bands including Atomic Rooster, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Asia and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Along the way his dazzling speed and mastery of the drums, combined with his infectious stage personality, have secured for him a respected place in history as one of Rock and Roll’s greatest drummers.
Palmer’s current schedule includes instructing drum clinics & master classes and he has once again set out to create his own new band and along with bassist SIMON FITZPATRICK and guitarist extraordinaire PAUL BIELATOWICZ he formed the progressive trio “Palmer”. The thought of Carl Palmer assembling a progressive trio might seem like he was relying on formula, especially since the band’s material consisted mainly of ELP classics, but this was indeed a new direction. Purely guitar driven, this band put a new face on such tracks as “Pictures At An Exhibition” which the band will perform at ‘Rockin’ The Park’ with dizzying complexity and an energy perhaps not heard since the earliest days of ELP.
Fans fortunate enough to see the group live immediately embrace their raw power and virtuosity and critics were quick to agree. Malcolm Dome of Classic Rock Magazine wrote, “The venerable Palmer, who is still great Drummer, leads his current line up though impressive re-workings of ELP music” and added, “There's an energy and edge here that belongs to today. The music might go way back, but the musicianship is most certainly from here and now.” Tim Jones of Record Collector magazine observed, “If you like instrumental virtuosity this should sit well with you.” Palmer, the band, began touring at will and are looking forward to playing in Clumber Park.

FOCUS - a Dutch rock band which was founded by classically trained organist/flautist Thijs van Leer in 1969, and is most famous for the instrumental pieces "Hocus Pocus" and "Sylvia". In 1971, the group released Focus II (aka Moving Waves), which brought the band international acclaim and a hit on both sides of the Atlantic with the radio edit of "Hocus Pocus". This rock classic consists of Akkerman's guitar chord sequence used as a recurring theme, with quirky and energetic interludes that include alto flute riffs, accordion, guitar, and drum solos - along with Van Leer's whistling, nonsensical vocals, falsetto singing, and yodeling.
In May 2010, Nike included "Hocus Pocus" as the main theme tune in their extended FIFA World Cup commercial. The advert was first aired on US Network TV during the UEFA Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan on 22 May and then throughout the World Cup. A re-release of "Hocus Pocus", due to the Nike commercial, led to the song entering the UK Singles Chart at No 57.

CURVED AIR – Curved Air are a pioneering British progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classic, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. The group evolved out of the band Sisyphus which was formed by Darryl Way (who studied violin at Dartington College and the Royal College of Music) and Francis Monkman, a member of the Royal Academy of Music. . He felt that Sonja Kristina, an aspiring folk musician who he had seen in the London stage production of Hair was the missing ingredient in the group.
The band changed their name to Curved Air, after the album A Rainbow in Curved Air by contemporary composer Terry Riley. The name was suggested by Monkman who, having played in the first London performance of In C, was a great fan of Riley. in summer 1970 Curved Air signed with Warner Bros., becoming the first British band on the company's roster. The band received a much-publicized advance of £100,000 and their debut album Airconditioning was released in November to enormous hype surrounding its being issued as the first commercially available LP picture disc. The album reached number 8 in the UK Albums Chart, even though an accompanying single, "It Happened Today," failed to chart.
Curved Air founder members - vocalist Sonja Kristina and drummer Florian Pilkington-Miksa together with ace guitarist Kit Morgan and bassist Chris Harris - are joined for ‘Rockin’ The Park’ by special guests, Paul Sax on electric violin and Robert Norton on keyboards.
Paul and Robert toured extensively with Sonja in the '90s with her solo project acts Acid Folk and Cloud Ten. Electric violinist Paul has evolved from classical beginnings at Yehudi Menuhin School to develop a fiery romantic style, drawing from a timeless mix of evocative melody and classic rock energy. Paul has performed with many bands and is a long-term member of the highly successful alternative street band, The Huckleberries. Robert Norton (keyboards) trained at the Purcell School of Music. Through deeply emotive playing and his mastery of sonic atmospheres, together with years of classical /jazz-funk collaborations and improvisation, Robert brings expanded dimensions and possibilities to Curved Air.

THE STRAWBS (Acoustic) – the perfect band to open ‘Rockin’ The Park’ The Strawbs first performance was at a folk club in Clapham in 1963, run by Russell Quaye and his wife Hilda Syms in the back room of their house. On arrival, asked for the name of their band, Dave Cousins, improvising brilliantly, suggested that, as they rehearsed in Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, they should be known as the Strawberry Hill Boys, later this was to be shortened to The Strawbs
During the course of the summer of 1967, the trio hooked up with rising folk diva Sandy Denny, and very soon afterwards found themselves recording what they hoped would be their debut album in a recording studio in Copenhagen. Dave's song "Ringing Down The Years", written about Sandy after her tragic death in 1978, recalls first meeting Sandy at the Troubadour and being so impressed with her that he immediately asked her to join the Strawbs. Dave has recently recalled recording the first ever version of "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" in his front room at Hounslow round about this time.
Rick Wakeman was a student at the Royal Academy of Music, who after being introduced to sessions by Chas Cronk (later to join the Strawbs), took to them like a duck to water and played on countless sessions, mainly for Tony Visconti.
In 1983 Dave Cousins appeared on the first episode of Rick Wakeman's TV talk show "Gas Tank". Rick had wanted to re-unite the version of Strawbs which played the QEH back in 1970 and got Hooper, Hudson, Ford and Cousins to join him for a live version of "The Hangman And The Papist". Shortly afterwards, Cambridge Folk Festival organiser Ken Woollard approached the band about an appearance at Cambridge that year.
When Dave Cousins and Brian Willoughby were booked to do an increasingly rare due gig in Twickenham in late 2000; it looked as though it would be cancelled as Dave had damaged his wrist in an accident. However, Dave Lambert was drafted in to save the day. It was apparent that the three-hander format was a winner, so, after working up more of the repertoire in an acoustic format, Cousins Willoughby and Lambert rechristened themselves "Acoustic Strawbs" and went into the studio to put some of them down on tape. In May 2004, Brian Willoughby announced that he was leaving the Strawbs after the Knaresborough Festival in August 2004 to concentrate on his work with Cathryn Craig, both here and in Cathryn's native USA. Replacing Brian in the Acoustic Strawbs was a familiar face, one Chas Cronk, then rehearsing with the electric band for the US/Canada tour.
